Going NUCLEAR: Australia set to SCRAP $90bn program to build French subs – switching to American-made nuclear-powered submarines as territorial tensions grow (Report)

Australia’s next submarine fleet will be nuclear-powered and American-made with British tech – replacing the current Collins class subs with a vessel more suitable to changing strategic circumstances in the region. (ABC News AU)

The nuclear submarines will likely be based in Western Australia, and it is expected there will be an increased allied naval presence north of the country.

The deal appears to be part of a new 3-nation security pact between the US, UK and Australia set to be announced by President Biden on Wednesday – reportedly in a bid to counter China’s territorial aggression, especially in the contested South China Sea.
