2006 - Jack Dorsey leads establishment of new platform called 'Twttr', later renamed to Twitter.

2007 - Twitter Inc. becomes its own company.
2008 - Twitter reaches 100 million tweets per quarter and also rejects a $500 million acquisition offer from Facebook.
2009 - Twitter introduces 'Verified Accounts' for public figures and Ashton Kutcher becomes the first user to gain a million followers.
2011 - Co-founder Jack Dorsey returns to the company as executive chairman.
2012 - Twitter reaches 100 million active users.
2013 - Twitter becomes a public company, with its shares listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
2014 - Twitter introduces native video capability.
2016 - Twitter discontinues Vine, and increases character limit for tweets from 140 to 280.
2020 - Twitter adds fact-checking labels to tweets and major security breach leads to high-profile accounts hacked in a Bitcoin scam.
2021 - Account of former President Trump is suspended amid attack on the US Capitol, Twitter Blue is launched.
2022 - Elon Musk reaches a deal to acquire the company for $44 billion and take it private.
