South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu has died at the age of 90. He was the first black African to hold the positions of Bishop of Johannesburg and Archbishop of Capetown. He won the Nobel Prize in 1984 for playing a prominent role in ending apartheid in South Africa.

He retired from public life in 2010. His death was confirmed by South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa.
